Super WD6 Hydraulic pump

Using SWD6 today Hydraulic Pump and all associated hydraulic pipes and resivior got so hot. I am sure I would have scallded myself had I touched the pump housing left it to cool down and tried it again got very hot quite quickly and also started leaking oil from pump joint gaskets and also through distributor.the only hydraulics being used was the power steering. I realise i need new pump seals, but can anyone shed any light on what may have gone wrong to cause pump to overheat. thanks in advance Eric....
