Oh Boy do you ever need a book. The screen is on the end of the filter when you remove. One thing if the hyd valves havn't been used in a long time they were probably dry and got some rust in them from condensation.
I remember at one time IH had a item called a "clean up filter" that you put in and it was to clean up the hytran. Also you might put a hose in the couplers and circulate the oil thru the valve and get it loosend up that way.
