Thanks for the responses. I can see how the threads on the bolts (studs actually) could have gotten worn down over time to look 'non-standard' if the previous owners left 'em loose. Since you guys say there's room to bore that thing out and put in inserts, I'll look into doing that. Before I remove any metal, though, I think I'll go get a 5/8-11 end tap and try to clean those threads up-- maybe I can replace the old hardware and be o.k. Surely can't hurt.
