The sector shaft has changed twice that I know of. First it was a square end shaft where the center steering arm clamped on. Then it went to a tapered shaft with a woodruff key and a large nut held the arm on. At one time this could have the older ball and socket arm, later it had the arm for "automotive" tie rods. Finally, they changed the size of the woodruff keyway at the top of the shaft, enlarged it. That requires the newer sector gear with a larger keyway.

If you replace the bearings, bushings, and seals in the gearbox, and also replace the sector shaft and sector gear you won't be far from spending $800. Before you replace gears/shafts, it would be worth your time to check with a machine shop.

Also, I don't know the tolerances for the fit on all these parts, but I can tell you that you can have "slop" in them, causing your wheels to wobble, when everything "feels" tight when you try to "wiggle" stuff by hand!
