Most likely your problem is due to the pilot bushing dragging and keeping things turning. If there is the slightest burr or roughness on the end of the drive shaft that goes in the pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft, you will have this problem. A heavier oil in the the transmission to give a little more drag will help. Other than that, you just have to be patient and wait a few seconds for things to stop turning. I have this problem on one of my tractors and that is what I do, just wait. After it is in gear, no problems changing between gears.
