Starting a IH706D with German 310 engine

Hi

We have a less than loved IH706D with the German 310 engine. Have just installed a new top end kit in the 310 engine, and put it back together. However, she won't start! We're running just the basic motor - most of the electrics are disconnected. The engine turns OK, but won't fire even with an ether spray. In that case, can rule out the pump and the injectors. Any ideas?

Saw a reply in the list about recessed valves being a problem??

Any really obvious gotchas here, 'cos I think we have fallen for one of them...

eg what tension should the head bolts be at?
