On a voltage regulator, the unit wound with the finest wire is the voltage regulating component. The units wound with heavy wire are the cutout and the current regulator that protects the generator from overheating from putting out excessive curent while trying to bring the battery up to voltage. The normal charging voltage for a 6 Volt battery is 6.9 to 7.4 Volts, measured at the battery, across the terminals. If your charging system is within this range, and the battery is bubbling excessively, suspect a bad battery. Charging at 7.2 Volts should be just fine.
