There is a mark on the outside diameter of the fly wheel and I think the pointer is on the sorta half moon shaped inspection plate that is at the rear of the engine and bolted to the torque tube(bell housing)I think you have to try to look through the hole where you get in to grease the throw out bearing.
Myself, I take the number 1 plug out, use a soft wire inserted into the cylinder as a feeler and turn the engine until the piston comes to top dead center,(flashlight works sometimes too) then you are either on # 1 or #4 as they both come to the top at the same time.
You should be able to tell which one by looking to see if the rotor button is pointing on or near the # 1 or # 4 terminal inside the dist cap.
If it is pointing to # 1, and you are sure the piston is at the top, then watch the points and turn the dist just until the points open....you should be real close....close enough to start it anyway.
After you start the engine, rotate the dist. a little each way until the engine runs the best....and then tighten the bolt to hold the dist in place....you should be "good to go" then.
Oh yeah...while your in the dist, adjust the point gap to the proper setting.
