Battery goes by itself on one post, and charging system and ALL loads (if any) go on other post. If meter is hooked up backwards for a given battery ground, it will READ BACKWARDS, but not be harmed. If this is the case, swap all wires to the opposite post from where you started. The meter you have is more than likely for a negative ground system, and you will wind up with the battery on the (ALT) terminal, and the wire from the charging system to the (BAT) terminal.
