Youv'e got some work ahead of you. The reason that the groove is too shallow is because there is a gasket already in there. This is exactly what happens when the previous owner changed the filter without changing the gasket, eventually, the gasket becomes hard and brittle and will no longer seal, but by then it has become so packed in there that you can't get it out except in pieces. You will need some sort of a pick and whatever else you can come up with to dig and scrape the old one out of there. Good luck, been there, done that.
