Battery Connections?????

Fellows I need your help AGAIN! I have just gotten an Oringal Parts Manual for a Super C that I am restoring of "POP'S".
In it shows wiring connections. I am now "re-doing" the electrical system. It shows the negative cable of the battery going to the cranking motor(starter) and the positive side GROUNDED!! ---6 volt system with distributor---
I have never know it to be that way and "POP" isn't with me anymore to ask--because without a doubt he knew and turned every bolt and screw. This was the last thing we were doing together and I plan to finish the job for HIM!
Anyway does this sound right or am I looking at the diagram all wrong. I would appreciate your help on this and the other questions I am sure will follow.
