I agree with Bluelite, it's not likely to be the tranny. The high range gear in that transmission is just a collar that locks 2 halves of the top shaft together. Besides the things Bluelite mentioned, it could also be that the detent spring is broken or dirty and not putting enough pressure on the detent ball to hold it in gear, or the fork could be bent and not properly engaging the gear ( not likely as that would take a serious pull on the lever to bend!!).
If you never use high range it's not a big dael, but since you know this happens, it would seem you do. It's not a hard fix, the rails are all in the top cover. Just make sure that when you put the cover back on that ALL the forks properly engage their respective gears.
