460 Hydraulic Pump Replacement

Finally...after whining about my whining pump for so long, I removed it from the 460. Broke it down in my brother's shop. Inspection comfirms suspicion--it is hosed. For reinstallation, the I&T Manual says to vary the number and thicknesses of the pump mounting flange gaskets so that the backlash between the pump driven gear and the PTO gear is 0.002 to 0.022 inches. How is this backlash measured since the gears are not accessible once the pump is in place?
