The movie was shot in Sparta, IL which is about 15 miles from where I live. The dealership closed about 12 years ago. I was in the dealership several times with my uncles when I was a kid. The owner is the mechanic using the acetylene torch in the shop. The owner's daughter is one of the people that walk past the windows in one of the scenes. Jess's Garage where Mr. Tibbs stayed and got his car is outside of town. You can still see the sign painted on the corrugated metal siding although it is getting pretty weathered.
