cold diesel fuel?

Started my 484 this morning and let it stand for about 5 mins running at about 1100rpm. When I came back to it the engine was down on power and the revs where surging up and down but it never quit. I thought it was possibly because the tap on one half of the [saddle] fuel tank was shut, but there was plenty in the other half anyway. I opened the other tap anyway but it didn't seem to make any difference. About 3 or 4 mins later it suddenly cleared up and has been normal ever since. The temp here in the UK got down to a meagre -4C last night - could that have been the cause? My fuel is not treated in any way.
