Locking Differential

I stepped on the locking differential pedal as I was backing up a grade with the manure spreader. The wheels locked and it worked perfectly, but when I released the pedal the locking diferential did not release, I haven't looked closely at it but could it be that since its not often used it just needs some lubricant on the pedal and shift mechanism? What would you do to get it to release?...Mike in Exeter Ontario
