Yes- it does work, and my Father did that in the 50s when the power was out- but it is an emergency measure only! It is hard on the valves if done on a regular basis. Old vacuum operated milkers don't have a brain, so they don't care about the source of the vacuum- back then, if the pulsator clicked, we thought everything was ok! It sure beat going back to the barn when the power came back on.
