I was just reading your post my question is- Did the caller call it DSL? which stands for digital subsriber line. This is a new high speed internet service, much like the cable modem, your internet is always on, you don't need a second phone line just for the net, but you do need to be within 18,000 feet of a fiber hub or a telco central office. You can be on the internet and talk on the phone line at the same time,it is usually cheaper than cable modem. I work for SBC communication here in the UP of Michigan, (second largest telco and larget DSL provider in the country) DSL is being installed this month up here, runs about $30 month and speed is 386kps and no slow down when system gets busy with traffic as you are not on the Pipeline like cable.
