positive and negative are reversed! Why does it wo

On a Farmall M, somebody reversed the polarity when they insalled an 8v battery (It is still a 6v system). The positive terminal is grounded. The negative goes to the starter. I don't understand why it works and I need to replace the battery with a regular 6v. But do I connect the new one the same way? Thanks for your help,
