I believe that adding detergent oil to an engine that is full of crud and has not been running a detergent oil can loosen up that stuff that was sticking safely to the innards. Since I know my engine was dip cleaned when I had the new cylinders, I am not so worried about stirring up the muck. Perhaps that is what happened to the Cub? It is hard to say now. Changes in oils can lead to problems though. Ask Lycoming (aero engines). Mobile 1 airplane oil caused problems in some airplane engines. Result, Mobile had to replace some very expensive engines some years ago. What is going on in there is a sort of black science that not everyone fully understands. Filters were also designed with various oils in mind, so changing to an oil that the filter is not compatible with can lead to trouble as well. Somehow buying a new Kubota is not going to be in the cards for me. Regards.
