Hugh, my vote is pilot bearing. I don't know if 230 is same as SC but SC only had bronze bushing for pilot bearing. When we had SC with loader on it and loader hydraulics supplied by PTO driven pump, we had to change pilot bearing about every 3 years. It would give same symptons as you described. Never changed a clutch or throwout bearing in the 6 years that we owned SC.

I hope your brother has a heated garage to split the 230 or it is warmer in N.S. than eastern Ont.
