Banks in Kansas are not interested in feeding any farmer's ego by loaning $50 to $100 thousand on shiny peices of junk. It a lot safer to loan that kind of money on 2 or three SUVs to some guys working in town then one loan that depends on world peace and rain coming at the right time. The banks that loaned on ego instead of cash flow all went out of business around 1985. My brothers are still running IH but it has more to do with the dealer service in their area. 30 years ago IH and JD both had about 45% of the sales and all the other makes had the last 10%. Then the IH dealer took over the Case dealership and still retained about 35-40% of market, JD stayed about the same while the smaller dealers moved up a little. IH HAD a pretty good dealer network when it was combined with Case, the working relationships those dealers established over 20 to 80 years remained strong even if the brand did not. In my area the IH dealer was in a weak position and went under in 1987. With that went the local service and IH equipment was slowly weeded out as most farmers didn't consider 40 mile drives for parts condusive to business. Still see a few 86 series tractors in the field but for the most part RED has all but vanished from the landscape.
