You say the starter turns quite vigorously, poor starters don't do that with or without good cables or battery. Jonathan's test will confirm these things, but I think I allready see the answer. Your ponts and condencer are poor and need replacing. Also take a good look at your rotor and distributor cap. Not being able to deliver power will act much the same as not having power.
