They usually were left unpainted if added on new or else they got painted red at the factory I believe. Some folks have preferred to paint them black or red to help preserve the surface from the effects of sun or rain. It is really a personal preference as its your tractor. Here's the one on my '44 H that I used black BBQ hi-temp paint on.
