I noticed that is a 12 volt battery. This would lead me to believe that the cause of this explosion was not do to a 6v/12v jump-starting issue. More likely it was caused by someone charging a battery near an ignition source. Or possibly jumping a battery and not following the precautions you would normally use. You would be surprised at how few people actually follow all the precautions right to the letter. Most have just been lucky.
