I just helped a friend work on his 9spd.........The "U" shaped steel that does the shifting was supported on the opposite side of the level by a pin, washers, and two cotter pins on his. So intern this held the side the handle is attached too up as well. I believe this is what your talking about. If you need anymore help let me know.............Alot of people have 9spds on the net but we couldn't find anyone who worked on them............He asked me to help and we got it figured out.
