Matt - The model sounds like a late 50's alright. To confirm try to find the casting date codes on the head and the block. That'll tell you the date the part was cast at the foundry - and is usually within a few months of the date the engine was assembled.

Date codes are formatted like this * xx - yy - z * where xx is the day, yy in the month, and z is the year (the "*" denote screw head patterns). Year codes for:
A = 1955
B = '56
C = '57
D = '58
etc.
