Bart - Good chance if the regulator is NOT marked with a voltage it is a 6 volt unit. You can test like this: Take the cover off the regulator and determine which relay inside is the cutout. It'll be the one wound with two coils together on the same magnet spool - one wound with fine wire and the other with a few turns of heavy wire. Now take the regulator and using 12 volts from your car battery (with the engine off), connect the regulator BAT terminal to battery +, then ground the regulator frame. If the cutout relay does nothing when you make the connection you have a 12 volt regulator. If the cutout "pulls in" (it's contacts close) you have a 6 volt regulator.
