Lots of possibilities, some more likely than others. If you had to shut it off, you almost certainly didn't break the cam or cam gear. One big bang, then missing out badly? Perhaps a broken rod or a valve through the head of a piston. Maybe it's not all that bad, though. I had my '49 M start making noise like a war had broken out in the midsection of the tractor. Turned out I'd lost one of the bolts in the coupler for the drive shaft that runs above the lift-all hydraulic pump. I'd check that before I dropped the pan on the engine, unless your'e SURE it's in the engine. Good luck!
