I always shut mine down by retarting the timing - works fine. Couple of thoughts on starting the tractor - don't advance the timing all the way or the tractor will kick like a mule and be dangerous to crank and also if the belt pully is installed it acts like another flywheel and I've found it easier to block the clutch so the pully doesn't turn while trying to crank it. If I'm not going to use the belt pully for a while I take it off of mine and I have the cap that goes over the shaft so It's not exposed.
