Take the shifter out of the top of the tranny. (You'll have to knock the pin out that hold the shifter in. Its at the base of the shifter.) Take a long screw driver and put it back in neutral. Put shifter back in, put you pin back in, you can put a large hose clamp around the base until you can get to an IH dealer to get the cute little caps that go on each side of the pin.
More that likely the ball on the end of the shifter has wore enough to let it slid by the rails. I've welded them up and ground them back round and it helps. Hope this helps.
