Never had much luck getting sludge to dissolve by putting in diesel fuel or kerosine and just letting it set. I suggest getting a big pump type oil can with a long flex spout on it and filling the can with diesel fuel or kerosine.(Please don't use gasoline, it's a fire and health hazard!) Use the flex spout to get around the parts in there and squirt the solvent to wash the sludge out the drain hole. A bit tedious, but with patience, I think you can clean out most of the sludge.
