Your points may have heavily oxidized and only making contact on one tiny spot. When you regapped the points you may have slightly changed the contact point to a bad area. Using gloves hold or preferably tie the coil wire about a half inch away from the block and crank engine, if you are getting a healthy blue spark, can't be a point problem. I have also seen capacitors fail and cause a no or erratic spark condition. For the price of them, when i feel points are the reason my tractor isn't running right i throw in a new set with capacitor. You should also pull the bottom off your carb and check the passages just for peace of mind.
