U block on a B tractor

I have a FAB, sort of. Somewhere, someone switched the block to a U. I just pulled the oil pan off and found that the cam has a lobe that corresponds to a plate on the outside of the block. The plate is below and to the rear of the magneto. The hole that it covers is about 1 1/4" wide. What was this hole for? Can you think of any other surprises that I might encounter as I get her running again? Thanks for your help.
