The position of the rotor, #1 cylinder, and marks on the crankshaft pulley should be as David says, in addition install the mag with the top against the block, with everything lined up as above. Then pull it away from the block until it trips. To check, make one more rev, preferably with the hand crank until it trips again. Every thing should be lined up as before.
