super A starting system

I am about to start sprucing up an old super a it will be used in my rowcrop operation for cultivation and sidedressing. I am unfamiliar with the ins and outs of a positive ground system and frankly do not understand why it is used. The system is currently six volt positive ground, the mag has been bypassed and a coil is used. my questions are:
-why positive ground?
-if I experience any problems with the system as is, is there a tried and true update? (coil vs mag etc.)
-what is and where can i get the last word in manuals for this rig?
-number on head above exhaust reads "251172R1" what year is this machine?
