if the clutch has never been replaced before. a 53 year old clutch might have just worn out. on the clutch their are 3 fingers that pull the pressure plate back allowing the clutch to slip freely. The throw out bearing might have siezed up do to lack of lube and after all the time the clutch pedal was pushed the bearing might have worn through the clutch fingers meaning when you push the pedal the bearing might be going past the fingers and not disangaging the clutch. that is my experience. good luck.
