Buster - As the name implies there's only a single wire required for a 1-wire alternator: It runs from the alternator to the ammeter. No extra diode's, lamps, jumpers, etc are required. HOWEVER there is a cost for this simplicity: 1 - First cost of the alternator is higher (about double a 3-wire unit). 2 - Single wire alternators must be spun up to a much higher RPM at startup before they begin to generate current. Can be a problem sometimes on low RPM tractor engines. Punch below for a wiring diagram for a single wire unit that may help clarify...
