Have you checked the timing? If your engine is out of time it will not have a lot of power & will also cause it to run hot. A 300 should be able to pull a 2-14 trailer plow all day in any type of soil in 3rd w/o a whimper. I wouldn't worry too much about a quart of oil in 15 to 20 hours of working time. When it gets up to a quart every 4-5 hrs of hard work, I'd check it out. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
