The stock generator shouldn't charge more than about 15 amp at WOT. More than that makes the generator run hot and can burn it out - will also boil your battery dry over time. A new regulator shouldn't need to be adjusted. Also without the right instruments and tools a regulator is nearly impossible for the average mechanic to get it set right. I suggest this instead: 1 - Check to see make sure there's not a ground in the wiring between the generator F and regulator FLD terminals: Pull the wire off the FLD terminal at the regulator with the motor running at half throttle. If the wiring is good the ammeter should drop to 0 or show a slight discharge with the wire disconnected. 2 - If your generator has an adjustable 3rd brush (the last ones made did not) you can adjust it to lower the current output: Loosen the 3rd brush clamp screw a couple turns - it's on the back end of the generator near the oiler cup. Then carefully rotate the 3rd brush AWAY from it's neighbor. The farther the 3rd brush is from the fixed brush, the lower the generator's output. Finally retighten the clamp screw. If these don't work, you probably have the wrong regulator - only cure is to swap it for the right one. Good luck!
