Sounds to me like a chassis dowel pin. There is a smaller dowel pin in the PTO too, but I suspect you'd have trouble engaging/disengaging the PTO if that pin worked loose. I found the PTO thrust bearing floating around in my chassis after I took the top cover off. Part of my left wheel bearing cage was also floating around in there.
