Farmall A not charging

I just had my Farmall A restored and converted to a 12V system. Well I never looked at the ammeter to see if it was charging, and one day this week I tried to start it and the battery was dead. So I crank started it and it started fine, but the meter was reading discharge. Anyway it was getting dark and I needed to use the lights which worked fine at first but got dimmer and dimmer until they finally were useless. All the guy that restored it did was put a 12V battery and 12V lights and voltage regulator in it and said this would work, but now I'm not so sure? Can anyone give me any tips cause I wanna get it fixed right. Thankyou for any input.
