How to inspect Farmall M Clutch Assembly

I am working on a friend 1940 Farmall M. The clutch does not work. Will someone tell me the easiest way to inspect the clutch assembly without splitting the tractor. I have read Kelly' information on the Model H, but not sure the two tractor are configured the same. I believe from looking at this tractor the lift pump can be lowered for clutch inspection, but not sure. I do not have the manuals. Thanks in advance Dave
