You need to keep all cables hooked up. You may want to disconnect the ground cable where it fastens to the frame of the tractor. Take a wire brush and clean both the end of the cable and the area where it fastens to the frame. Have to have good contact. Shorting across the switch just means that you are jumpering across the two connection posts on the switch. This just makes sure that the switch isn't your problem.
