Hi Ted, my brother has a 454D witch is the 1970s version of a 484 and is has well over 10,000 hours on it and he never has to add a drop of oil between changes. So something is wrong. Since the oil level is going down and breather fuming. This would appear to be caused by cylinder blow by which could be caused by broken ring(s) or worn rings and sleeves. The other problem that can happen to this engine is if the fan belt brakes the engine will heat up very quickly, the antifreeze will boil and the pressure will blow the "O" ring seals on the bottom of the sleeves. But this is not your problem as you would have antifreeze in the oil. These engines are cheaper to rebuild as they only 3 cylinders and are easy to work on. Please let us know the final fix. Good luck JB
