W 4 trouble with 5th gear

This tractor will not stay in 5th gear. I know that the H has the same problem. What causes this most of the time and what will need to be fixed or replaced? I have it about ready to take the top off of the trans. Should I be carefull with anything or is it straight forward getting it off with out any problems? Anything else I should know or look for?
