I worked at FARMALL from 1976 till the end of 1981. Large cardboard tubes were slid over the bar axles before the main chassis of the tractor was put thru the paint booth on the main line. Tractors were then hung by hooks from a ceiling mounted conveyor system in what was called "The Repair Loop" After inspections, tests, and/or repairs and adjustments were done the tractor went down the FINISH Assembly line. Ken Updike's book "The Number Series, 1955-1985" has pics of this line during 706/806 production, maybe even 460/560 too, been a while since I re-read it for the Umteenth time. Front wheels with tires mounted and front hubs installed and rear wheels with tires & rims attached to cast centers were installed as the last thing before the tractors were ready to drive outside under their own power. So to confirm what EVERYONE else has said, FARMALL never painted the bar axles. If We did, We're sorry... And We promise to Never Ever Let it Happen again! ;-)
