Points and Condenser on M Farmall with Magneto

Hi, I bought an M with a Magneto which is not firing. I plan to emory/file points to see if this helps. I have changed many points with battery ignition but not with a magneto. Whats the difference and why does the engine have to be TDC on # 1 cylinder I'm told. I'm down to taking the two screws out in front of the points which holds the distributor cap springs. Could some one walk me through this. Thanks, Pat
