questions (and a short story) on my '40 H

Happy Labor Day to all! Yesterday, I got brave and pulled the valve cover off to reveal a very dark and oily head. Pulled if off to reveal 4 very nice looking pistons and smooth sleeve walls with some surface rust at the top. Pistons had very little carbon build up. Cleaned them up, as well as the walls, scrapped the remaining old head gasket off. QUESTIONS: 1. What do I clean the head with. The old oil has made a film on it that's hard to wipe off. 2. What do I look for on the head? Is there any checks I need to do it while I've got it off the engine? 3. What else would you do to the engine? FYI. It ran pretty good when I parked it a month ago. Took the oil pan off yesterday too, no big news to report there. No shavings, no sludge build-up. After what I saw yesterday, and after seeing almost nothing in the tranny and rear end when last week, I'm starting to think one of two things: 1. the tractor wasn't used a whole lot. or, 2. the tractor was very well taken care off. hmmmm, just a thought, as always, thanks for lookin' bill
