Get it in a dark place maybe at night and watch around the coil tower while running or trying to start, if you see leakage (spark) jumping to ground, the points are the likely problem, (to close) a lot of times if the engine dies because water on wires open up the points and it will likely run. Of course this is when all else is in fair to good shape.
